On Wednesday, Hutchins City Council will hold a special-called meeting to discuss a potential proposal to put an immigration detention facility in their city.According to the agenda, the council will meet mostly behind closed doors with its city attorneys. It’s unknown how much the council will share or discuss with the public when they come out of executive session. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Hutchins City Hall.Hutchins city leaders continue to strongly deny having any official information about a possible Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in their community, even as reports and public concern continue to grow. The proposed facility, which has not been confirmed by the federal government, centers on a 1‐million‐square‐foot warehouse along Interstate 45. Federal documents reported by The Washington Post in December indicated ICE was evaluating nearly two dozen possible sites nationwide, including Hutchins.Despite circulating reports, Hutchins officials said they have received no applications, permits, or direct communication from any federal agency regarding plans for a detention center. The city reiterated that immigration enforcement falls strictly under federal jurisdiction. In the city’s official statement posted at the end of January, leaders wrote:“As increasing numbers of news reports indicate, there appear to be potential plans for an ICE facility at a privately owned warehouse in our community. As of today, the City has not received any official information confirming these reports’ accuracy, nor has anyone from the federal government contacted us about such plans or any related local impacts. There have been no applications for building permits or certificates of occupancy, nor any inquiries related to infrastructure capabilities. As you are aware, immigration and customs enforcement duties are federal responsibilities and not within the jurisdiction of the City. When and if we have any verified, factual information that we can share, we will certainly do so, as part of our abiding commitment to public transparency and protecting the interests of our community to the best of our abilities.”Mayor Mario Vasquez has been vocal that city leaders stand firmly against any federal plan that would place such a facility in Hutchins. He shared those thoughts during the city’s regularly scheduled council meeting on Monday.“We’re building a community here. And this doesn’t match what we’re trying to do here. So if you think that anybody up here is on board with it, you’re in the wrong building. Nobody up here in this diocese is on board with what they’re trying to put here,” he said.In that council meeting, Hutchins residents packed the room to express fears about the scale of the rumored facility, which could hold more people than the city’s entire population. Reports indicate the warehouse could house up to 9,500 detainees.“The biggest concern is that this is going to be one of the biggest ones in the US if it is built. And we have seen all the human rights issues that have been happening inside of them,” said Hutchins resident Ezo Alvarez.Dallas CountyFeb 3Concerns over ICE facility proposal in HutchinsDallas CountyFeb 2Hutchins residents pushback on proposed ICE detention facilityFormer Hutchins city manager Carl Oscar Sherman has also raised red flags about whether the city has the infrastructure to support such a massive federal operation.“This is a local government, and local control should be respected. That facility does not have the capacity. This city does not have the infrastructure. To add more than 150% population to your city overnight, it’s impossible for them to facilitate that kind of demand,” he said.In a statement provided to NBC 5, officials with the regional ICE office said:“At this time, we have no new detention centers to announce. Every day, DHS is conducting law enforcement activities across the country to keep Americans safe. It should not come as news that ICE will be making arrests in states across the U.S. and is actively working to expand detention space. ICE is targeting the worst of the worst, including murderers, rapists, criminals, gang members, and more. 70% of ICE arrests are of illegal aliens charged or convicted of a crime in the U.S. Thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill, ICE has new funding to expand detention space to keep these criminals off American streets before they are removed for good from our communities.”Wednesday night’s special meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Hutchins City Hall. After the closed‐door briefing with attorneys, the council may return to open session and could take action. How much information city leaders will be able to share publicly remains unclear.
